Grapefruit juice may interact with many medications because it contains furanocoumarins, which inhibit the cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes found in the parenchymal cells of the liver and within the epithelial cells lining the small intestines and colon.1 Oral drugs with low oral bioavailability that are metabolized by the CYP3A4 isozyme have the most potential to interact with grapefruit juice.
